Trilobites and Sand Dollars - oh no MORE fossils!

 ~ Trilobites & Sand dollars ~
Oh no MORE fossils!

Okay, I admit it! I have no self control when it comes to jewellery supplies.  There.  I said it.  It's 11:42 pm and I should be fast asleep, but instead, I'm drooling over what most people would consider to be very creepy cabochons!

I have been eyeing some sand dollar cabochons for months.  The first ones that I spied were fantastic!  Then some bugger bought them right under my nose!  I guess it's like the saying goes... "You snooze, you lose!"

This time I tried so very hard to hold back.  It worked for awhile.  I have to slow down on my buying because I just don't make enough sales to compensate for more supplies, tools, classes and books.  There has to be a limit right?

But tonight, with a HUGE spring clean out sale going on and yet only one tiny sale and a trade behind me, I still cracked!

(Read more about my fossil collection.)

So let me introduce you to my new friend Mr. Trilobite and his smaller side kicks Trilobite Junior x 2 and 3 happy sand dollars.

Trilobites are extinct.  They were hard-shelled animals that lived in the ocean and seas millions of years ago - about 500 million years to be exact!  The evolved during the Paleozoic Era and went extinct nearing the end of the Permian period which was about 248 million years ago. Among the early animals, Trilobites were so prominent and so successful that the Cambrian Period is often called the "Age of Trilobites"!

Here is Mr. Trilobite.  He is a whopping 30 x 22 mm and
will make an absolutely crazy pendant!

Trilobite Jr. x 2 are a little bit smaller at 18 x 13 mm.  I figure they will make the coolest rings for geeky rock hounds like me! :)

Finally, let me introduce you to the darling sand dollar trio! All around 13 or 14 x 12 mm, they will make lovely focal points for simple sterling rings.  I was drooling over these for ages... My how I love my memories of the ocean!  Aren't they sweet?!?

(These cabochons were purchased from CreativeCabs on Etsy - I'll let you know how it goes!)

I'm hoping my little friends arrive soon!  I can't wait to meet them all in person! :)

UPDATE on CREATIVECABS! (May 18 2011)
Got my cabs yesterday and they are AWESOME!  Even better in person.  I'm so happy with the cabs that I'm hoping to order more very soon.  Jeff - from CreativeCabs - was great.  Always quick to reply to questions and awesome products.  Highly recommended.

  2. Thanks Aldrin James! I spend a lot of time trying to source materials to work with - later down the road I would love to cut the cabochons myself (but that is when I get my own studio!) In the fall, I'm hoping to make these into jewellery and I can't wait to get started on them.
